POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Manager of Registration plays a crucial role in overseeing and directing all aspects of ROM’s registration activities and staff. This position is instrumental in managing various facets of museum operations, including acquisitions, Cultural Property applications, accessions, deaccessions, and loan management. The Senior Manager fosters a positive workplace through mentorship and direction and establishes collaborative relationships across the organization to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the registration department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversee and direct all aspects of ROM’s registration activities and staff.
  • Manage a team responsible for acquisitions, Cultural Property applications, accessions, deaccessions, loans, registration aspects of travelling exhibitions, condition reporting, collections travel, copyright, collections insurance, and intellectual property.
  • Collaborate closely with the Chief of Collections Care, Senior Manager of Conservation, Manager of Exhibit Preparation and Maintenance, Exhibitions staff, and the Co-Chief Curators of Art & Culture and Natural History.
  • Guide and coach the team for equitable and judicious work allocation, aligning the department with institution-level goals and strategies.
  • Create, communicate, and implement policies and procedures within the department.
  • Support professional development and growth within the registration department.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and laws, participate in insurance claims and renewals, and collaborate on contracts for travelling exhibitions.
  • Manage sensitive donor relationships through social skills and legal knowledge.
  • Serve as a skilled communicator, adept at building strong partnerships at all levels within an active and dynamic workplace.
  • Assess risks and develop strategies and opportunities in line with industry standards and best practices.
  • Understand and adapt to the rapidly changing role of museums in contemporary society, especially in relation to colonialism and Indigenous culture.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree in Museology or a museum-related discipline, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of eight years’ experience in collections management in a medium to large museum, including three years at a supervisory level, with familiarity in both art and natural history collections.
  • Exceptional skills in team building, mentoring, and change management, along with a flexible and collaborative work style.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in collections management principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with repatriation, restitution, international museum relations, provenance, and museum ethics; deep knowledge of Indigenous cultures is beneficial.
  • Knowledge in Fine Arts Insurance, contract administration, and project management.
  • Understanding of domestic and international couriering practices; familiarity with loans and travelling exhibitions.
  • Experience with collections management systems, digital imaging, and intellectual property rights; proficiency in TMS is advantageous.
  • Proven track record in developing written policies and procedures.
  • Advanced administrative, managerial, and interpersonal skills; capable of handling a wide range of registration tasks at all levels.
  • Recognized ability to build cross-departmental relationships and strategic thinking.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of collections encompassing both arts and sciences.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations, such as the Income Tax Act, Copyright Act, Cultural Property Import and Export Act, Canada Travelling Exhibitions Indemnification Act, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), Access to Information Act, Privacy Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Firearms Act, etc.
  • Superior oral and written English communication skills; proficiency in a second language is a valuable asset.
Salary and Terms of Employment 

START DATE: March 2024

EMPLOYEE GROUP: EXEMPT
SALARY:  $100,000.00 – $120,000.00
SCHEDULE:  35 hours weekly
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:   six (6) months
LOCATION (hybrid): Toronto, ON
