WHO WE NEED

We are seeking a Garay Intern – Meteorites to support the Meteorite Collection Documentation and Classification Project.

This internship provides hands-on experience working with meteorite specimens, contributing to both collections stewardship and scientific research. The intern will support the documentation, imaging, and classification of meteorite materials, including newly donated specimens, while working closely with curatorial and collections staff.

This role contributes to ROM’s strategic priorities by strengthening the documentation, analysis, and long-term stewardship of the museum’s meteorite collection, supporting its continued growth as a key scientific resource.


HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT
  • Image meteorite thin sections using polarized light microscopy to support high-quality documentation of type specimens
  • Describe, analyze, and assist in the classification of newly donated meteorite specimens using petrographic microscopy and supporting data
  • Record and interpret observational and analytical data to help determine meteorite types and characteristics
  • Conduct background research on meteorite classification methods, including familiarity with analytical techniques such as EPMA
  • Collaborate with curatorial and collections staff to review findings and refine specimen identification
  • Prepare and present a summary report of findings to support collection documentation and research efforts

WHAT YOU BRING
  • Completion of at least three (3) years of post-secondary education in Earth Sciences or a related field (e.g., geology, mineralogy, planetary science)
  • Experience with petrographic microscopy
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when working with scientific specimens and data
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a research or collections environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Interest in meteorites, planetary science, or museum-based scientific research

SALARY & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • START DATE: as early as May 19, 2026

  • STATUS: Full-time Contract

  • EXPECTED COMPENSATION: $18/hour
  • SCHEDULE: 35 hours weekly 
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: The internship period will serve as the evaluation period for this role.
